I liked how K&R gave an overview to C's memory management and the PH notes went into further detail, though I'm still not quite sure of exactly how copying, generational, and parallel garbage collection works. The figures 10.3 to 10.5 were pretty confusing, though I think the notes do a good job in describing the overall idea. I think the difficult part is looking at the code and understanding how it's actually executed.
