Register spilling means that information in registers are slowly loaded to memory and then later reloaded back into the registers.  By using registers $t0-$t9 for holding temporary values, the convention cuts down on the necessary saving and loading times of some registers.  Only registers $s0-$s7 need to be saved and loaded.
