The convention is to use two classes of registers to avoid saving and restoring a register whose value is never used: the 10 temporary registers $t0-$t9 and 8 saved registers $s0-$s7.

I'm not sure if I understand what this questions is asking, but I'm going to go with the base case.  In scheme, I got lots of errors that had something to do with the base case, like "invalid argument to first"

I'm finding it harder to understand the reading everyday because I am behind with MIPS.  It was hard for me to understand MIPS code.

MIPS stuff seems interesting, though, so I'll try to catch up (and hopefully get ahead) over the weekend.
