Well an answer machine is one, because it needs to determine what ring state it is, to wait for three rings until it starts up.  One other state machines could be a 1 minute timer that loops, 0->1...->99->0.  Lastly, another FSM could be a fan control.  It takes temperature of the room as input.  And switches between the states of heat and air conditioning.
