Because VM allocated pagesi in chunks, we need not search for contiguous blocks of memory to allocate to a program. all the os has to do is find enough pages in the main memory. Big chunks solve the above problem but increase the miss time. smaller chunks, though decrease the miss time, make the os responsible for finding enough space to put a block of memory which requires special hardware and support.
