With allocations in fixed-size chunks, it creates a system of mapping that runs more smoothly.  It lets us predict where things would go, rather than with sizes that vary.  With bigger chunks, the allocated pages can hold more, but can lead to inner-fragmentation.  Smaller chunks are good because most everything done requires small chunks.
